It involves a deep sense of envy and affects\u00a0self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-2\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">It&#8217;s not just the sense that there might be better things that you could be doing at this moment, but it is the feeling that you are missing out on something fundamentally important that others are experiencing right now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The phenomenon is becoming increasingly common\u2014in part thanks to social media\u2014and can cause significant\u00a0stress\u00a0in your life. It can affect just about anyone, but some people are at greater risk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-6\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Here is what you should know about the history of FOMO, what research says, how to recognize it in your life, and how to manage FOMO to keep it from negatively affecting your\u00a0happiness.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-10\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block wellness-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Brief History of FOMO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The idea that you might be missing out on a good time is not new to our era. However, while it has presumably been around for centuries (you can see evidence of FOMO in ancient texts), it has only been studied during the past few decades, beginning with a 1996 research paper by marketing strategist, Dr. Dan Herman, who coined the term \u00abfear of missing out.\u00bb<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-1\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Since the advent of social media, however, FOMO has become more obvious and has been studied more often. Social media has accelerated the OMO phenomenon in several ways. It provides a situation in which you are comparing your regular life to the\u00a0<em>highlights<\/em>\u00a0of others&#8217; lives.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Therefore, your sense of \u00abnormal\u00bb becomes skewed and you seem to be doing worse than your peers. You might see detailed photos of your friends enjoying fun times without you, which is something that people may not have been so readily aware of in past generations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-adslot mntl-block\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-17\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Social media creates a platform for bragging; it is where things, events, and even happiness itself seems to be in competition at times. People are comparing their best, picture-perfect experiences, which may lead you to wonder what you are lacking.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Related Terms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-21\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Inspired by FOMO, several other related concepts have also emerged:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li><strong>FOBO (Fear of Better Options)<\/strong>: This refers to fearing that you are missing out on potentially better alternatives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>MOMO (Mystery of Missing Out)<\/strong>: This refers to fearing that you are missing out but not having any clues about what you&#8217;re missing out on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ROMO: (Reality of Missing Out)<\/strong>: This refers to knowing that you aren&#8217;t missing out on anything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>FOJI (Fear of Joining In)<\/strong>: The fear of sharing things on social media but not garnering any response.<\/li>\n<li><strong>JOMO (Joy of Missing Out)<\/strong>: This is the opposite of FOMO and refers to positive feelings about missing out or disconnecting from social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-28\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block wellness-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Research on FOMO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-29\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">As more research on FOMO is conducted and becomes available, we are getting a clearer picture of what it entails and how it affects us. The picture is not pretty,\u00a0as there are many negative effects of FOMO, and it is more common than you might expect. Consider the following:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-32\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Social Networking Sites<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-33\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Unsurprisingly, adolescents use social networking sites at a high rate and may experience FOMO as a result. Interestingly, however, FOMO acts as a mechanism that triggers higher social networking usage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wellness-sc-block-callout--takeaway_1-0\" class=\"comp theme-takeaway wellness-sc-block-callout--takeaway wellness-sc-block-callout-base mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\">\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_1-0\" class=\"comp expert-content takeaway mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block\">\n<p>Girls experiencing depression tend to use social networking sites at a greater rate while, for boys, anxiety was a trigger for greater social media use.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-2\">2<\/span>\u00a0This shows that increased use of social media can lead to higher stress rates caused by FOMO.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-37\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">FOMO, Age, and Gender<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-38\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">People of all ages can experience FOMO, several studies have found. One study in the\u00a0<em>Psychiatry Research<\/em>\u00a0journal found that the fear of missing out was linked to greater smartphone and social media usage and that this link was not associated with age or gender.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-3\">3<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">So what is the key cause of FOMO? While multiple factors likely play a role, the research also found that social media use and \u00abproblematic\u00bb smartphone usage were linked with a greater experience of FOMO.\u00a0Smartphone usage\u00a0was related to fears of negative and even positive evaluations by others as well as linked to negative effects on mood.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-42\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Adolescents and young people may be particularly susceptible to the effects of FOMO. Seeing friends and others posting on social media can lead to comparison and an intense fear of missing out on things their peers are experiencing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-44\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Research suggests that in some teens, FOMO can play a role in:<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-7\">4<\/span><\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-46\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Depression<\/li>\n<li>Low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Risky behaviors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-48\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">FOMO can contribute to peer pressure, leading teens to engage in risky behaviors they might otherwise avoid. Because the teenage brain is still developing, teens may engage in such actions without considering the lasting consequences.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Life Satisfaction Rating<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-52\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Another article published in\u00a0<em>Computers and Human Behavior<\/em>\u00a0found several trends associated with FOMO. Fear of missing out was found to be associated with a lower sense of having one&#8217;s needs met as well as a lower feeling of life satisfaction in general.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">5<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-54\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">FOMO was heavily linked to higher engagement in social media, as other studies have suggested\u2014it appears that FOMO is linked to both feeling a need to engage in social media and increasing that engagement. This means that FOMO and social media habits may contribute to a negative, self-perpetuating cycle.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-57\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Potential Dangers of FOMO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Aside from increased feelings of unhappiness, fear of missing out can lead to greater involvement in unhealthy behaviors. For example, the same study in\u00a0<em>Computers and Human Behavior\u00a0<\/em>found that FOMO was linked to distracted driving, which in some cases can be deadly.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-63\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block wellness-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">Minimizing FOMO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-64\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Fortunately, steps can be taken to curb your FOMO if it is something you experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"wellness-sc-block-callout--takeaway_1-0-1\" class=\"comp theme-takeaway wellness-sc-block-callout--takeaway wellness-sc-block-callout-base mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\">\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_1-0-1\" class=\"comp expert-content takeaway mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block\">\n<p>Research shows that a fear of missing out can stem from unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life and that these feelings can propel us into greater social media usage.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">5<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-67\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">In turn, greater engagement with social media can make us feel worse about ourselves and our lives, not better. In this way, it helps to know that our attempts to alleviate feelings of FOMO can actually lead to behaviors that exacerbate it. \u200bUnderstanding where the problem lies, however, can be a great first step in overcoming it. The following can help.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-70\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Change Your Focus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-71\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Rather than focusing on what you lack, try noticing what you have. This is easier said than done on social media, where we may be bombarded with images of things we do not have, but it can be done. Add more\u00a0positive people\u00a0to your feed; hide people who tend to brag too much or who are not supportive of you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-73\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">You can change your feed to show you less of what triggers your FOMO and more of what makes you feel good about yourself. Work on identifying what may be sapping your joy online. Work to minimize these as you add more to your feed (and life) that makes you happy.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-76\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Try a Digital Detox<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-77\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Spending too much time on your phone or social media apps can increase FOMO. Reducing your usage, or even doing a\u00a0digital detox\u00a0where you take a break from digital devices, may help you focus more on your life without making constant comparisons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-79\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If doing a complete digital detox isn&#8217;t possible, consider limiting your use of certain social media apps that make you feel as if you are missing out. Temporarily remove those apps, set daily limits on how much you will use them, or cull your feel to remove people who make you feel bad about yourself or your life.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-82\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Keep a Journal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-83\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">It is common to post on social media to keep a record of the fun things you do. However, you may find yourself noticing a little too much about whether people are validating your experiences online. Feelings of\u00a0loneliness\u00a0or exclusion are actually our brain&#8217;s way of telling us that we want to seek out greater connections with others and increase our sense of\u00a0belonging.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-5\">6<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-90\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Unfortunately, social media engagement is not always the way to accomplish this\u2014you might be running from one bad situation right into an even worse one. Rather than trying to connect more with people on social media, why not arrange to meet up with someone in person?<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-92\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Making plans with a good friend, creating a group outing, or doing anything social that gets you out with friends can be a nice change of pace, and it can help you to shake that feeling that you are missing out. It puts you in the center of the action.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-94\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If you do not have time to make plans, even a direct message on social media to a friend can foster a greater and more intimate connection than posting to all of your friends and hoping for \u00ablikes.\u00bb<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-97\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">Focus on Gratitude<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-98\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Studies show that engaging in gratitude-enhancing activities like\u00a0gratitude journaling\u00a0or simply telling others what you appreciate about them can lift your spirits as well as those of everyone around you.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" data-id=\"#citation-6\">7<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-100\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This is partially because it is harder to feel as if you lack the things you need in life when you are focused on the abundance you already have. You likely will not feel as tempted to go down the rabbit hole of social networking and FOMO when you realize how much you already have. You will begin to feel that you have what you need in life and so do other people.
